Ulric + Arly
Role — Founder & Designer
Ulric + Arly was a textile design studio that I founded and operated in Barbados from 2015 - 2019. Ulric + Arly's homeware collection consisted of limited edition napkins, placemats, and tea towels made from 100% cotton. The collection was inspired by my grandfathers, Ulric, a diligent educator, and Arly, a charismatic blacksmith. Each piece was individually hand printed and handmade in Barbados. Ulric + Arly had multipile stockists in Barbados and Brooklyn, New York.
Ulric Gibbs Crick was a Mathematics teacher and school principal from Saint James, Barbados. He especially enjoyed teaching Geometry, a chief element in my artwork.
Horace Arlington King a.k.a. Arly, was a Blacksmith from Saint Lucy, Barbados. He began apprenticing at the age of 13 in order to support his mother and sister following his father's sudden death. As a professional blacksmith, he founded King's Engineering Works, where he employed five highly skilled full-time workers.
Together, my grandfathers' qualities served as the foundation for the Ulric + Arly studio.
